History of the WHYC

1989

North Point Marina opens on May 1.

1993

A small group of North Point Marina boaters discuss the feasibility and interest in creating a yacht club.

The designated building site for a yacht club was switched from the original location to where the WHYC stands today; the original site is where The Tropics restaurant is located.

1994

The WHYC is incorporated as a 501-C7 non-for-profit on April 18.

Joyce Fink was elected the first Commodore of the WHYC.

1998

Building begins at the site with the State of Illinois removing sand and loose soil while bringing in base materials.

The Pavilion is constructed.

1999

Constructions begins on the WHYC clubhouse with the build being completed in 2000, ahead of schedule.

2001

The Clubhouse is completed and open to the membership at an original investment of $850,000 for facilities and furnishings.

2011

A near-tornadic wind storm on June 30 sweeps down Lake Michigan with winds clocked over 100mph and blows off the steel roofing from the entire north side roof of the clubhouse. Several large trees toppled, SkipperBud's buildings were damaged, and several docks dislodged from the shore. The damage is repaired that year.

2019

The WHYC celebrates 25 years as an organization.

2020

COVID-19 strikes the nation. With so many rules changing constantly, WHYC members and North Point Marina slipholders watch as the harbor does not open until May 1, and then with only two people per boat. The Clubhouse opened on May 23 with carry-out drinks only from the Canoe Bar that could be enjoyed on the Pavilion.

The Clubhouse celebrates 20 years, although a party is not officially held until 2021.
